What are the passenger rights in case of flight disruptions with Qatar Airways?
Disruptions can occur during your journey. This may involve a delay, cancellation, or overbooking. EC 261 regulation entitles you to financial compensation.
What compensation can I receive?
A delay, cancellation, or overbooking of your flight entitles you to compensation for the inconvenience caused. The airline's compensation depends on the distance of the journey and its duration.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
Which flights are covered by EC 261 regulation?
The EC 261 regulation aims to protect and compensate passengers affected by a flight disruption (delay, cancellation, or overbooking). There are two scenarios where you can automatically receive compensation.
- Travellers whose arrival airport is located within the European Union can claim compensation for a delay or cancellation, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Travellers from a non-EU country whose final destination and airline are within the European Union.
A strike by Qatar Airways staff
The EC 261 regulation states that airline staff strikes entitle you to financial compensation.
Note, the regulation does not cover airport staff strikes.
What is the compensation for a delay?
If your flight is delayed, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. EC 261 regulation strictly governs the conditions for compensation. To qualify, the delay must be over 3 hours at an EU airport.
EC 261 regulation only applies to flights delayed due to specific conditions (technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not qualify for compensation.
What is the compensation for a Qatar Airways flight delay?
To receive compensation for a cancellation, it must occur less than 14 days before departure. The law considers that travellers did not have sufficient time to find an alternative solution.
In the event of a cancelled flight, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or refund your ticket. If you choose to take the alternative flight, your flat-rate compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and estimated delay at arrival. Compensation can be up to €600 per passenger.
Can I receive compensation for overbooking?
Overbooking is when the airline sells more tickets than available seats on the flight. If this happens to you, you may be entitled to compensation.
Note, to claim compensation, you must not be among the volunteers who agree not to board.
The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance.
- For a flight up to 1,500 km, you may claim up to €250.
- For a flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you may claim up to €400.
- For an EU flight over 3,500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
