Your rights at Copenhagen Airport

Air travel can sometimes be disrupted, affecting the quality of your flight. You might experience a  delay, a  cancellation, or  overbooking. These disruptions entitle you to compensation as outlined in  EC Regulation 261. This regulation aims to protect travellers who have faced inconveniences during their flight.

 Compensation amounts

If your flight has experienced one of the following  disruptions : a delay, a cancellation, or overbooking, you can submit a  compensation claim to the airline. The compensation amount depends on several factors, including the  distance of the journey and its  duration.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for delays under 2 hours or €250 for delays of 2 hours or more.
  •  For an intra-European Union flight over 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for delays under 2 hours or €400 for delays of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a non-European Union flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for delays under 2 hours or €400 for delays of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a non-European Union flight over 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for delays under 2 hours or €600 for delays over 4 hours.

Copenhagen Airport: which flights are covered by the European regulation

EC Regulation 261 protects travellers who have experienced a disruption (delay, cancellation, or overbooking) on their flight. There are currently two scenarios where  EC Regulation 261 automatically applies , allowing you to receive  compensation

  • Passengers whose arrival airport is within the European Union can claim compensation for delays or cancellations, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
  •  Passengers departing from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are within the European Union.

Strike at Copenhagen Airport

Airline staff strikes are among the situations that may entitle you to  compensation from the airline. If a delay or cancellation occurs due to an airline staff strike, you may receive compensation.  Note that EC Regulation 261 does not cover airport staff strikes and does not provide for compensation in such cases.

Compensation for a flight delay at Copenhagen Airport

If your flight was  delayed and affected your arrival or boarding time, you may be entitled to  compensation. The European Union's EC Regulation 261 allows you to file a claim and receive compensation. Be aware that the regulation specifies the conditions under which compensation is possible. There must be a delay of  more than 2 hours at an EU airport.

It is important to note that  EC Regulation 261 covers  only flights delayed due to  specific conditions such as a technical fault or operational issue for which the  airline is  responsible.  Extraordinary circumstances do not qualify for compensation.

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Copenhagen Airport

If your  flight was  cancelled, you can submit a compensation claim to your airline. To be eligible for this compensation, the cancellation must have occurred  less than 14 days before departure. The law assumes that passengers did not have enough time to find an alternative solution following the flight cancellation.

In the event of a flight cancellation,  the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to take the alternative flight, your  fixed compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to  €600 per passenger.  Note that the compensation amount varies depending on the delay duration and flight distance.

Overbooking at Copenhagen Airport

Some airlines practice  overbooking , also known as  overselling. This means the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight. If this happens to you, you can submit a  compensation claim.

Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The compensation amount depends on the journey length. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
  •  For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
  •  For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
