How to get a refund for a Finnair flight?
For personal or professional reasons, you may need to change or cancel your flight. Airlines are not obliged to refund your ticket.
You should check the fare conditions of the carrier to see if your ticket can be changed or refunded. Finnair offers the possibility to change your ticket and potentially obtain a refund if you cancel. Indeed, for Economy Flex, Premium Economy Flex, or Business Flex tickets, you can make changes and obtain a refund. Changes can be made directly on the airline's website.
Your rights in case of flight disruption with Finnair
As a flight passenger, you may encounter specific situations. In the event of a delay, cancellation or overbooking, you have the right to enforce your rights. Under certain conditions, passengers on a disrupted flight are entitled to claim compensation for the inconvenience caused. Depending on the circumstances, the amount received may vary.
What compensation amount for disruptions?
In the event of a delay, cancellation or overbooking of your flight, you may receive compensation from the airline. The amount of your compensation depends on the distance of the journey, as well as the duration of the delay.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a non-European Union flight of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a non-European Union flight of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
Which types of flights are covered by European law?
The EC 261 regulation aims to protect and compensate passengers affected by a delay, cancellation or overbooking of their flight.
There are currently two situations where the EC 261 regulation automatically applies and allows for compensation:
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Passengers departing from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Strikes within Finnair: what are your rights?
If you were unable to board due to a strike by airline staff, you may be entitled to compensation from the carrier. The EC 261 regulation does not provide compensation for airport staff strikes.
Compensation for a flight delay with Finnair
If your flight was delayed on arrival or departure, the EC 261 regulation allows you to make a claim with Finnair and receive compensation. Please note, the regulation states that there must be a delay of more than 3 hours at a European Union airport to qualify for compensation.
It should be noted that the EC 261 regulation applies only to flights where the delay is due to specific conditions for which the airline is responsible
Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight with Finnair
If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to financial compensation. To qualify, the cancellation must have occurred less than 14 days before departure. The law considers that passengers did not have sufficient time to find an alternative solution following the flight cancellation.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your compensation is calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller.

Overbooking with Finnair
Overbooking or overselling is a practice where the airline sells more tickets than available seats on the flight. This situation entitles you to compensation.
Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be among the volunteers who agree not to board.
- The compensation amount depends on the journey length. For a flight up to 1,500 km, you can claim up to €250.
- For a flight distance between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you can claim up to €400 in compensation.
- For an EU flight over 3,500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
