Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport: a key centre of the country and a place rich in history

Once a crucial freight transport centre, Amsterdam Airport is located on the site of an old fort that served as a defence line for the city. It was a military base for a long time before gradually transforming, especially after the Olympics, into a key hub for European travellers.

Amsterdam Airport is located 17.5 km southwest of Amsterdam and is accessible by public transport, taxi, and car. Secure parking facilities allow you to leave your vehicle for the duration of your stay. While waiting, you can enjoy Wi-Fi to browse your favourite sites. The numerous shops offer you the chance to purchase holiday souvenirs. Food lovers will enjoy discovering the country's culinary specialities before boarding their flight.

What are your rights when travelling from Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport?

Flying is an opportunity for many travellers to explore beautiful destinations. However, certain disruptions can occur during a flight, affecting the quality of your journey. These include  delays, cancellations or  overbooking of your flight. Thanks to EC 261 regulation, these three disruptions allow you to make a  compensation claim with your airline.

What amount of compensation can you claim in case of a problem?

If you have experienced a  delay, a  cancellation or  overbooking during your flight, you can seek  compensation from the airline. The amount of your compensation is calculated based on the  distance of the journey and its  duration.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to:

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
  •  For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.

What types of incidents can be covered by the European regulation in force at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport?

The European Union has implemented  EC 261 regulation to protect and compensate travellers who have experienced a disruption ( delay, cancellation or overbooking ) during their flight. There are currently two scenarios where the regulation applies automatically.

  • Travellers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in case of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or the destination.
  •  Travellers coming from a non-European Union state but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

What to do in case of a strike at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport?

The  EC 261 regulation protects individuals who have experienced a disruption on their flight. If your delay or cancellation is due to an  airline staff strike, you can request compensation. Note, the regulation does not cover airport staff strikes and does not allow for compensation.

Can you be covered in case of a flight delay at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport?

If there was a  delay on your flight that affected your departure or arrival time, you can make a  compensation claim. The EC 261 regulation allows you to file a claim to receive compensation. Note, to be eligible for this financial compensation, there must be a  delay of more than 2 hours at an airport within the European Union.

The  EC 261 regulation applies only in situations or  specific conditions such as a technical fault or an operational issue for which the  airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not allow for compensation claims

Your flight from Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport is cancelled, what should you do?

If your  flight is  cancelled, you can make a  compensation claim with the airline. However, the cancellation must be  less than 14 days before departure. The regulation considers that passengers did not have enough time to find an alternative solution following the disruption.

If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your  fixed compensation will be calculated based on the  distance of the flight and the estimated  delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to  €600 per traveller. Note that the compensation amount varies depending on the length of the delay and the distance of the flight.

Overbooked flight at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, are you eligible for compensation?

Overbooking, also known as  overselling, is a practice where the airline has sold more tickets than available seats on the flight. If you experience overbooking during your journey, you may be entitled to  compensation.

Note, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board to be eligible for this compensation.

  • The amount of compensation depends on the distance of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you can claim a maximum of €250.
  •  For a flight with a distance between 1500 and 3500 km, you can claim a maximum compensation of €400.
  •  For an EU flight with a distance greater than 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400 and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU state.
