Your rights at Barcelona-El Prat Airport
During a flight, several disruptions can occur and affect your experience. These may include a delay, a cancellation, or overbooking. The EC 261 regulation implemented by the European Union allows you to claim financial compensation. This regulation aims to protect and compensate travellers who have experienced inconvenience on their flight.
What is the amount of compensation?
If your flight has been disrupted by a delay, cancellation, or overbooking, you can submit a compensation claim to the airline. The compensation amount is calculated based on the distance and duration of the journey.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for less than 2 hours delay or €600 for more than 4 hours delay.
Which flights are covered by the EC 261 regulation?
The EC 261 regulation protects passengers who have experienced a disruption (delay, cancellation, or overbooking) on their flight. There are two scenarios where the EC 261 regulation applies automatically and entitles you to compensation.
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delay or cancellation, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Passengers coming from a non-EU country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

If you experience a delay during your flight that changes your arrival time, you can submit a compensation claim. The EC 261 regulation, established by the European Union, allows you to receive compensation for the inconvenience caused. However, there must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an EU airport.
The EC 261 regulation applies only to flights delayed due to specific conditions such as a technical fault or operational issue for which the airline is responsible.
Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation.
Claim compensation for a cancelled flight at Barcelona-El Prat Airport
A flight cancellation allows you to make a claim with your airline to receive compensation. Please note, to be eligible, the cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure. The regulation considers that passengers did not have enough time to find an alternative solution.
In the event of a flight cancellation, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your flat-rate compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller.

Overbooking at Barcelona-El Prat Airport
Overbooking or overselling is a practice where the airline has sold more tickets than available seats on the flight. If this happens to you, you can make a claim with the airline to receive compensation.
Please note, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board to be eligible for compensation.
- The compensation amount depends on the journey length. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight distance between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
- For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
