Airline Transavia
Transavia is a Dutch low-cost airline, founded in 1965. It is now a subsidiary of the Air France-KLM group.
Like other low-cost airlines, it offers tickets at highly competitive prices, in exchange for reduced service. By default, Transavia commits to transporting you and a small piece of hand luggage. Everything else is extra.
However, like any other airline, your flight may encounter issues. As a European airline, Transavia is subject to a number of regulations that protect travellers.
This includes Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, which protects passengers in cases of delays, cancellations or overbooking.

Does Transavia agree to refund its flights?
At Transavia, generally speaking, your ticket is not refundable.
However, if you look into the details, there are some conditions under which you can obtain at least a partial refund.
For example, you can cancel your flight ticket without specific conditions. If a refund for your ticket is not possible, you will at least recover the airport taxes. If you have taken out a cancellation insurance, or if you have one with your credit card (Visa Premier or Gold Mastercard), you may also, under certain conditions, expect a full refund.
However, certain specific situations entitle you to a refund, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. If your flight is cancelled or you are denied boarding due to overbooking, you can request a refund if no rerouting option suits you. Similarly, in the event of a delay of more than 5 hours, if no rerouting option suits you, you can again request a refund.
Please note: opting for a refund means you forfeit your flight with Transavia. Ensure there are no satisfactory alternatives with the airline before accepting.
What are your rights in case of flight disruption with Transavia?
Transavia is a Dutch airline, therefore subject to European Community law. This law requires airlines to provide assistance in the event of flight disruptions.
This includes:
- Rerouting in case of cancellation or overbooking
- The right to meals and drinks in case of significant delay
- The right to overnight accommodation if you have to wait until the next day to depart
- The right to two phone calls covered by the airline
How much can the compensation be?
In the event of a delay, flight cancellation, or denied boarding due to overbooking, European regulation (EC) No 261/2004 provides for compensation based on the following flat rates:
- €250 for a flight of less than 1500 km with a delay of 2 hours or more
- €400 for an extra-community flight of 1500 to 3500 km or a community flight of more than 1500 km with a delay of 3 hours or more
- €600 for an extra-community flight of more than 3500 km with a delay of 4 hours or more
Are flights operated by Transavia covered by European law?
This regulation applies to certain flights. It covers:
- Any flight departing from an airport within the European Community area (including Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland)
- Any flight to the European Community area operated by an airline based in this community area (including Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland)
Transavia is a Dutch airline, so it is systematically concerned.
What to do if Transavia staff go on strike?
A strike is mentioned as an “exceptional circumstance” in European regulation (EC) No 261/2004.
But it is important to look at what this covers in detail. It refers to an event that the airline could not foresee.
In an airport, there are not only airlines. Air traffic controllers or baggage handlers work for other employers. But in the event of a strike by an airline, it can indeed foresee the event. Therefore, it is responsible.
If a Transavia strike causes disruptions to your flight, the airline will therefore have to compensate you.
Your Transavia flight is delayed, can you be compensated?
In the event of a flight delay, you are entitled to a flat-rate compensation under the conditions defined by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.
If the delay is below the thresholds mentioned in this regulation, you will not be able to claim any compensation.
A flight cancelled by Transavia, what to do?
There is a subtle difference between a flight delay and a flight cancellation.
In the event of a cancellation, your flight is simply removed. This means the airline must reroute you on another flight, with a different number.
In this case, if the conditions are met, you are entitled to compensation regardless. However, if the delay experienced is below a certain threshold, the compensation will be reduced:
- From €250 to €125 for a flight of less than 1500 km with less than 2 hours delay
- From €400 to €200 for an extra-community flight of 1500 to 3500 km or a community flight of more than 1500 km with less than 3 hours delay
- From €600 to €300 for an extra-community flight of more than 3500 km with less than 4 hours delay
Overbooking practice by Transavia, what to do?
If the European airline denies you boarding due to overbooking, the compensation schedule is the same, with the same reduction as for flight cancellations.
In this situation, the airline is systematically responsible and compensation is due.

What to do in case of a flight issue with Transavia?
If you experience a delay or cancellation of a flight with Transavia, you will likely find out by checking the airport displays, or the airline will notify you by email.
In the case of overbooking, unfortunately, you will only find out at the time of boarding if the airline denies you.
But in any case, Transavia remains your point of contact. Therefore, do not hesitate to contact the airline for all your rights:
- Know the reason for the incident
- Rerouting within a reasonable time, if applicable
- Coverage of your expenses, if any (meals, accommodation, phone calls)
For compensation, you will need to wait until your arrival to assess the extent of the delay. Transavia offers a claim form on its website. You can fill it out to request compensation.
