Airline Air France
National airline, Air France was founded in 1933.
In the French collective imagination, Air France is not just a simple airline, it is a national treasure. For a long time a public company, it merged with the Dutch company KLM to become Air France-KLM. The French State remains its largest shareholder.
Air France has retained this image of a public service. It inspires trust among travellers and pride among its staff.
But like any airline, Air France can encounter incidents during its flights. If you have experienced a cancellation, flight delay or overbooking with Air France, then the following information is relevant to you.

How to get a refund for a flight with Air France?
Is it possible to get a refund for a flight with Air France? It depends on the reason, as well as the options you have chosen.
By default, an Air France plane ticket is non-refundable. However, it can become refundable under certain fare options.
In economy class, you can choose between the Light, Standard, Standard Plus, and Flex fares. Only the Flex fare allows for a refund. However, the ticket is significantly more expensive than the Light fare.
It is up to you to decide if a refundable ticket is worthwhile. As an option, Air France offers cancellation insurance, which covers you in case of cancellation, flight rescheduling, or missed flights.
Certain situations provided by law entitle you to a refund. Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 states that it is possible in the event of flight cancellation, overbooking, or delays of more than 5 hours.
However, be aware: if you accept a refund from Air France in such situations, you waive any other compensation and any other assistance.
Your rights in case of flight disruption with Air France
In case of flight disruption, European regulation (EC) No 261/2004 provides several provisions for travellers. These concern delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights.
You are entitled, among other things, to:
- A re-routing solution
- Drinks and meals in case of prolonged delay
- Accommodation if you need to stay overnight
- Two telephone calls
This regulation also provides for a fixed compensation. However, it is not automatic. The airline must pay it to you, except:
- If they informed you of the delay at least 15 days in advance
- If the replacement flight they offer departs and arrives at the same times
- In case of extraordinary circumstances (bad weather, risks to crew and passengers, strike, etc.)
Compensation amounts
The compensation amounts are fixed. They are payable from a certain level of delay. They are as follows:
- €250 for a flight of less than 1500 km with a delay of 2 hours or more
- €400 for an extra-EU flight of 1500 to 3500 km or an EU flight of more than 1500 km with a delay of 3 hours or more
- €600 for an extra-EU flight of more than 3500 km with a delay of 4 hours or more
Which flights are covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004?
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies to:
- Any flight departing from an airport in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, or Iceland
- Any flight arriving at an airport in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, or Iceland, operated by a European airline
Air France is a European airline, so this second point applies to it.

What to do in case of an airline strike?
European regulation (EC) No 261/2004 lists strike as an extraordinary circumstance. This implies that the airline could not have foreseen it. This is true in the case of strikes by air traffic controllers or baggage handlers.
But if it is a strike within Air France's own staff, it no longer applies. In the event of a strike notice, the airline must inform travellers within a reasonable time. If they fail to do so, they must compensate passengers for the delays caused.
Air France: compensation for a flight delay
To be eligible for compensation, the delay must not be due to extraordinary circumstances. Moreover, no compensation will be due unless the delay exceeds the thresholds set by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.
Air France: claiming compensation for a cancelled flight
In the event of a cancellation, you are entitled to compensation, even with a limited delay. However, if the delay remains within reasonable limits, there is a reduction in your compensation. It decreases from:
- €250 to €125 for a flight of less than 1500 km with a delay of less than 2 hours
- €400 to €200 for an extra-EU flight of 1500 to 3500 km or an EU flight of more than 1500 km with a delay of less than 3 hours
- €600 to €300 for an extra-EU flight of more than 3500 km with a delay of less than 4 hours
Air France: compensation for flight overbooking
In the event of denied boarding due to overbooking, Air France is responsible. Therefore, they must compensate you.
The compensation scale is the same as in the case of cancellation, with the same reductions if the delay caused is within reasonable limits.
What to do in case of a flight issue with Air France?
If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you will be informed via the airport displays. You may even be notified by email the day before.
In the case of overbooking, you will only find out at boarding when you are denied entry.
In either case, Air France remains the primary contact. You can:
- Ask for the reason for the incident
- Request re-routing solutions
- If the delay incurs costs, request coverage (meals, accommodation, phone calls)
- Finally, if Air France is found responsible, you can fill out a compensation claim on their website
