What are your rights as air passengers at London Heathrow Airport?

During a flight, you may encounter several disruptions that affect the quality of your journey. These could include a  delay, a  cancellation or  overbooking. The EC 261 regulation established by the European Union allows you to claim compensation if a disruption occurs on your flight.

What is the amount of compensation

If during your flight you experienced a  delay, a  cancellation or  overbooking, you may be entitled to  compensation as provided by the  EC 261 regulation. The compensation amount paid by the airline varies depending on the  duration and  distance of the flight.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
  •  For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.

What types of incidents are covered by European regulations when using London Heathrow Airport?

The European Union established the  EC 261 regulation to protect travellers affected by a  delay, a  cancellation or  overbooking on their flight. There are currently two scenarios where the regulation applies automatically.

  • Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in case of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
  •  Passengers departing from a non-EU country but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

What to do in case of a strike by London Heathrow Airport staff?

If during your flight you experience a  strike by airline staff resulting in a delay or cancellation, you can submit a  compensation claim to the airline. Note that strikes by airport staff are not covered by the EC 261 regulation and do not entitle you to compensation.

Can you be compensated if your flight departing from London Heathrow is delayed

A  flight delay by an airline allows you to submit a compensation claim to the airline. Indeed, the EC 261 regulation stipulates that passengers on a delayed flight can file a claim to receive financial compensation. Note that the regulation states that there must be a delay of  more than 2 hours at an EU airport to qualify for financial compensation.

The EC 261 regulation applies only in cases where the delay is due to  specific conditions (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation

What are your rights if your flight departing from London is cancelled

If your  flight is  cancelled, you can submit a  financial compensation claim to the airline. The EC 261 regulation strictly governs the conditions under which you can make your claim. The cancellation must occur  less than 14 days before departure. The regulation considers that passengers have not had sufficient time to find an alternative solution to the cancellation of their flight.

In the event of a flight cancellation, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to board the alternative flight, your  fixed compensation is calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to  €600 per passenger.

What to do in case of overbooking

Some airlines practice  overbooking, also known as  overselling. This means more tickets have been sold than there are seats available on the plane. If you find yourself in this situation, you can submit a  compensation claim to the airline.

Note that to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The compensation amount depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
  •  For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
  •  For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
