Air Malta offers Business class tickets that allow you to change the time or date of your flight. Please note, not all tickets are eligible for a refund. The EC 261 regulation established by the European Union allows passengers affected by delays, cancellations, or overbooking to receive compensation.
What is the compensation amount?
It's important to know that the amount of your compensation will depend on the duration and the distance of the journey.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to in the event of a flight cancellation with a replacement flight.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 3 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 3 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 4 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
The EC 261 regulation and the flights it covers
To enable passengers on cancelled, delayed, or overbooked flights to receive compensation, the European Union has implemented the EC 261 regulation. There are two situations where the regulation automatically applies:
Travellers departing from an airport located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Travellers departing from an airport located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Travellers coming from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Strikes within the airline Air Malta
Strikes by airline staff may entitle you to compensation. The EC 261 regulation only covers strikes by the airline and not those by airport staff.
Compensation for a flight delay with Air Malta
If your flight was delayed during its journey, you may be entitled to compensation.
To qualify, there must be a delay of more than 3 hours at an airport in the European Union.
The EC 261 regulation applies only to flights where the delay is due to specific circumstances for which the airline is responsible.
Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight with Air Malta
The EC 261 regulation states that your flight must be cancelled less than 14 days before departure.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation is calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600.
Overbooking with Air Malta
In case of flight overbooking, you may be entitled to compensation.
Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.
The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey.
- For a flight up to 1,500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
- For an EU flight over 1,500 km, the maximum compensation amount is €400.
- For a journey outside the EU over 3,500 km, you may receive compensation of €600.
