Your rights at Stockholm Airport

A flight is an opportunity for many travellers to embark on an adventure. However, certain disruptions can occur on your flight and affect the quality of your journey. These may include a delay, an cancellation or an overbooking. If you find yourself in one of these situations, be aware that EC 261 regulation allows you, under certain conditions, to receive financial compensation .

The amount of compensation in case of delay, cancellation or overbooking at Stockholm Airport

If you experience a delay, a cancellation or an overbooking, you can file a claim with the airline and receive compensation. The amount depends on the following two criteria

  • the length of the journey
  •  the duration of the delay

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
  •  For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.

Which flights are covered by EC 261 regulation

The European Union has implemented EC 261 regulation to protect travellers who have experienced a delay, a cancellation or an overbooking on their flight and to obtain compensation. There are currently two scenarios where the regulation applies automatically.

  • Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in case of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or the destination.
  •  Passengers from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

Strike at Stockholm Airport

EC 261 regulation covers delays and cancellations resulting from an airline staff strike. If you find yourself in this situation, you can submit a compensation claim. Please note, EC 261 regulation only applies to strikes by airline staff.

Strikes by airport staff are not covered by EC 261 regulation and do not entitle you to compensation.

Compensation for a flight delay at Stockholm Airport

A flight delay is one of the disruptions that can entitle you to compensation from the airline. However, it is important to note that the regulation strictly defines the conditions under which compensation can be claimed. There must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport in the European Union.

Please note, EC 261 regulation only covers flights delayed due to specific conditions (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Stockholm Airport

A flight cancellation can be inconvenient for passengers. That is why EC 261 regulation provides for compensation if your flight has been cancelled. However, the legislation strictly defines the conditions that entitle you to compensation. The cancellation must be less than 14 days before departure.

If your flight has been cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation is then calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller. As a reminder, the compensation amount varies depending on the delay duration and flight length.

Overbooking at Stockholm Airport

If, during your boarding, you have experienced overbooking or overselling, you can submit a compensation claim with the airline. Overbooking is a practice where the airline has sold more tickets than available seats on the flight.

Please note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The compensation amount depends on the journey length. For a flight up to 1500 km, you can claim up to €250.
  •  For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you can claim up to €400.
  •  For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country.
