What will be the amount of my compensation?

The amount of your compensation depends on the distance of the journey and the length of the delay.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to. These can vary depending on the type of flight issue encountered (delay, cancellation, overbooking, etc.).

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
  • For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.

Which flights are covered by EC Regulation 261?

The EC Regulation 261 was established by the European Union to protect and compensate travellers affected by a delay, cancellation, or overbooking of their flight.

There are currently two situations where EC Regulation 261 automatically applies and allows for compensation.

  • Travellers whose departure airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
  • Travellers coming from a non-EU country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

What happens in the event of a Kenya Airways airline strike?

Airline staff strikes allow you to claim compensation from the carrier. Note, EC Regulation 261 does not apply to airport staff strikes.

What is the compensation for a flight delay with Kenya Airways?

If your flight is delayed, affecting your arrival or departure time, you may be entitled to compensation. However, the delay must be more than 3 hours at a European Union airport.

It should be noted that EC Regulation 261 applies only to flights where the delay is due to specific conditions. Extraordinary circumstances do not allow for compensation claims.

Can I get compensation for a cancelled flight with Kenya Airways?

If your flight is cancelled, you may receive financial compensation from the airline. This is applicable if the cancellation occurs less than 14 days before departure.

If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you take the alternative flight, your compensation is calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600.
