Your rights as a traveller at Düsseldorf Airport

Many disruptions can occur during a flight. These can include  delays,  cancellations , or  overbooking. The EC 261 regulation  was established by the European Union to protect travellers. This regulation provides for compensation if a disruption occurs on your flight.  Under certain conditions, you may be entitled to compensation.

 Amount of compensation

If you have experienced a delay, cancellation, or overbooking,  you can submit a compensation claim to your airline. The amount of compensation depends on several factors:

  • the length of the journey
  • the duration of the delay

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
  •  For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
  •  For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.

Which flights does the EC 261 regulation cover?

There are two scenarios where  the EC 261 regulation automatically applies , allowing you to claim  compensation  for a delay, cancellation, or overbooking.

  • Travellers whose arrival airport is within the European Union can claim compensation for a delay or cancellation, regardless of the airline's nationality or the destination.
  •  Travellers from a non-EU country whose final destination and airline are within the European Union.

Strike at Düsseldorf Airport

Several situations can lead to a disruption of your flight.  Airline staff strikes  causing a delay or cancellation of your flight allow you to claim  compensation. Please note, the EC 261 regulation only applies in the case of a strike by the airline's staff. Strikes by airport staff are not covered by the EC 261 regulation and do not entitle you to compensation.

Compensation for a flight delay at Düsseldorf Airport

If your flight was disrupted by a  delay  preventing you from boarding at the time indicated on your ticket, you can submit a compensation claim.

Indeed, the  EC 261 regulation  allows passengers who have experienced a delay to make a claim. Please note, the regulation strictly governs the conditions under which compensation can be claimed. There must be a delay of  more than 2 hours  at an airport within the European Union.

Please note, the EC 261 regulation also only covers flights delayed due to  specific conditions  (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible.  Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation. These may include weather conditions or political instability.

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Düsseldorf Airport

A  cancelled flight  entitles you to  financial compensation  as provided by the European Union's EC 261 regulation.

However, to be eligible for compensation, the cancellation must have occurred  less than 14 days  before departure. The legislation considers that  passengers did not have sufficient time to find an alternative solution following the cancellation of their flight.

In the event of a flight cancellation,  the airline must offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to take the alternative flight, your  flat-rate compensation  will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to  €600  per passenger.  Note that the amount of compensation varies depending on the length of the delay and the flight distance.

Overbooking at Düsseldorf Airport

Overbooking, also known as overselling, is a practice where the airline sells more tickets than there are seats available on the plane. This situation entitles you to  financial compensation .

Please note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
  •  For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
  •  For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU country.
