Your rights at Palermo Airport

Air travel can involve numerous disruptions that may affect the quality of your journey. These can include a delay, a cancellation or overbooking. Be aware that the EC 261 regulation established by the European Union allows for compensation for passengers affected by a disruption.

What is the compensation amount provided by European law

If you have experienced a delay, a cancellation or overbooking, you can file a claim with the airline and receive compensation. The compensation amount depends on the following two criteria

  • the length of the journey
  • the duration of the journey.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to compensation of €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay or more.
  • For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
  • For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
  • For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €600 for more than 4 hours delay.

Which flights are covered by EC 261 regulation?

The EC 261 regulation allows you to claim compensation if you have experienced a delay, a cancellation or overbooking. There are currently two scenarios where the regulation applies automatically.

  • Travellers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in case of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or the destination.
  • Travellers coming from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

What to do in case of a strike at Palermo Airport?

If during your journey, an airline strike disrupts your flight (a delay, a cancellation or overbooking), you may be entitled to compensation from the airline as provided by the EC 261 regulation.

Strikes by airport staff are not covered by the EC 261 regulation and do not allow for compensation.

Claiming compensation for a flight delay at Palermo Airport

Is your flight delayed ? You can claim compensation from the airline. The EC 261 regulation states that there must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport in the European Union to be eligible for compensation.

Please note, the EC 261 regulation only covers flights delayed due to specific conditions (a technical fault or an operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not allow for compensation claims

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Palermo Airport

If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. However, it is essential that the cancellation is announced less than 14 days before the departure date.

If your flight has been cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to board the alternative flight, your flat-rate compensation is calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per passenger.

Compensation for overbooking at Palermo Airport

Overbooking is a practice where the airline has sold more tickets than available seats on the plane. If your flight is overbooked, you may be entitled to compensation as provided by the EC 261 regulation.

Please note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The compensation amount depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
  • For a flight with a distance between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €400.
  • For an EU flight with a distance over 3500 km, the maximum compensation amount is €400 and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU state.
