Airline ITA Airways

In 2021, following the financial difficulties of the carrier, the Italian government announced the replacement of the airline Alitalia with ITA Airways: Italia Trasporto Aereo. The former airline, Alitalia, was an Italian airline founded in 1946 which closed in 2021. It has now been replaced by ITA Airways. For many years, the airline served destinations worldwide and was considered one of the largest airlines in Europe. Whether you have an Alitalia or ITA ticket, you can claim compensation for your flight if it took place within the last five years.

How to get a refund for a flight with ITA Airways?

Do personal reasons require you to change or cancel your flight ticket? Be aware that regulations do not oblige airlines to refund flight tickets. The refund terms are specified in the airline's fare conditions. Since its rebranding in 2021, ITA Airways allows you to obtain a refund for tickets purchased on the carrier's online platform. To do this, the ticket must have a code starting with 055. You can use the contact form available on the website to make your claim.

If you have experienced a delay, cancellation, or overbooking on your flight, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. The amount of your compensation depends on the distance of the journey as well as its duration.

Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to:

  • For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to compensation of €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay or more.
  • For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.

Which flights does EC 261 regulation cover?

The European Union has implemented the EC 261 regulation to protect and compensate passengers affected by a delay, cancellation, or overbooking of their flight.

There are currently two scenarios where the EC 261 regulation automatically applies and allows for compensation.

  • Travellers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in the event of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or destination.
  • Travellers from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

Strikes within ITA Airways

If you were unable to board your flight due to an airline staff strike, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. The EC 261 regulation does not apply to airport staff strikes.

Compensation for a flight delay with ITA Airways

Have you experienced a delay that altered your arrival or departure time? Don't worry, the EC 261 regulation allows you to make a claim with the airline and receive compensation. Note that the regulation specifies the conditions under which compensation can be claimed. There must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport in the European Union.

It should be noted that the EC 261 regulation applies only to flights where the delay is due to specific conditions, such as a technical fault or operational issue for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not allow for compensation claims.

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight with ITA Airways

If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to financial compensation. The cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure. The law considers that passengers have not had enough time to find an alternative solution following the flight cancellation.

If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per passenger.

Overbooking with ITA Airways

Overbooking or overselling means that the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight. This situation entitles you to financial compensation.

Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.

  • The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1,500 km, you can claim a maximum of €250.
  • For a flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you can claim a maximum compensation of €400.
  • For an EU flight over 3,500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country.
