Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport
The airport of Bucharest-Henri Coandă is Romania's main airport and one of the two airports serving its capital, Bucharest.
Opened in 1965, it was renamed Henri Coandă in 2004, in honour of the Romanian inventor of the jet engine in 1911.
The airport is located 17 kilometres north of the city. It offers direct flights to 111 destinations in 35 different countries. Most of these are in Europe, but there are also flights to the Middle East (Israel, Turkey, Dubai).

Romania and European regulations
Since 2007, Romania has been part of the European Union. Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport is therefore subject to European community law.
In 2004, the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 established a community framework for civil aviation.
It includes rights for travellers, along with obligations for airlines.
Regulation (EC) 261/2004: which flights are covered?
The European regulation applies to:
- any flight departing from the European community area (including Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland)
- flights to the same community area, operated by an airline based there.
For example, if you take a FlyDubai flight to Bucharest from Dubai, you are not covered.
However, if you fly from Amman (in Jordan) with Ryanair, you are flying with an Irish (thus European) airline, so Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies.

If you are covered by European or British regulations (with British Airways), you have the same rights. While there may be differences in their application, the general principles remain the same.
Being taken to your destination
By purchasing a flight ticket, you make two commitments to the airline transporting you: to have the necessary documents and to arrive on time for boarding.
If you meet these conditions, the airline must take you to your destination. This obligation remains even in case of disruption.
In the event of cancellation or overbooking, they must offer you an alternative flight. If no satisfactory solution is available, they must refund your ticket.
Assistance in case of disruption
If your flight is significantly delayed, you may incur additional expenses (meals, hotel stay, etc.). The airline must cover these costs. Similarly, if you need to make phone calls, the airline must cover two of them.
Compensation, under conditions
Finally, you may be entitled to a fixed compensation, subject to conditions. This is calculated according to a specific method.
Flight delays may be compensated as follows:
- €250 for flights less than 1,500 km with a delay of 2 hours or more
- €400 for non-community flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km or community flights over 1,500 km with a delay of 3 hours or more
- €600 for non-community flights with a delay of 4 hours or more.
In the event of cancellation or overbooking, you are eligible for compensation according to the same scale, even with a shorter delay. However, this results in a reduction.
