Girona Airport
Girona-Costa Brava Airport, commonly referred to as Girona Airport, is situated 12 km from the city of the same name and 74 km from Barcelona. It is one of the main airports in Catalonia alongside Barcelona Airport.
Although it was established in 1965, it remained a small airport for many years. It wasn't until the 1990s, with the rise of low-cost flights, that it experienced a surge in activity. It welcomed up to 5.5 million travellers in 2008, before stabilising around 2 million in 2018.
It hosts several airlines, both European and British, and primarily operates domestic flights.
This means that most flights departing from and arriving at Girona are subject to European or British legislation.

What is the status of your flight at Girona Airport?
As a Spanish airport, Girona-Costa Brava is indeed subject to European law. This law defines your rights as well as the obligations it imposes on airlines.
The operation of European civil aviation is governed by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. It applies to:
- all flights departing from the European Community area (including Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland);
- flights to this area, operated by airlines based there.
Among the eight airlines present at Girona Airport, six are based in the European Union. The remaining two are British, Jet2.com and TUI Airways. They operate routes to the United Kingdom.
Since Brexit, the UK is no longer subject to Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. It has been replaced by a text incorporated into British national law, the UK261 regulation. This text retains the essence of the European regulation and guarantees you, with a few exceptions, the same rights.

Your rights at Girona Airport
At Girona Airport, you are subject to either European law, British law, or both. Both legislations provide the same rights for travellers. These rights come with the same obligations for airlines.
If you arrive on time for boarding, with a boarding pass and valid documents, the airline must take care of you until your arrival.
This obligation remains in case of delay, cancellation or denied boarding due to overbooking. If you experience a flight disruption, the airline must also cover the expenses incurred. This includes meals, drinks, and a hotel stay if necessary. You are also entitled to two phone calls.
If your flight is cancelled, overbooked or delayed by more than five hours, you are entitled to a full refund. However, this refund means forfeiting your journey. You also forfeit any care and any claims.
Finally, in the event of a disruption, you may also be eligible, under certain conditions, for a fixed compensation, with amounts ranging from €125 to €600.
This higher amount mainly applies to long-haul flights outside the European Union. At Girona Airport, you should expect compensation up to €400.
