If you experienced disruptions during your flight that affected your journey, you may be entitled to compensation as provided by EC Regulation 261. This could include a delay, cancellation, or overbooking of your flight.
What is the compensation amount?
The amount of compensation depends on the distance of the journey, as well as the estimated delay.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to. These may vary depending on the type of flight issue encountered (delay, cancellation, overbooking, etc.).
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
Which flights are covered by European law?
EC Regulation 261 aims to protect and compensate passengers affected by a disruption (delay, cancellation or overbooking). There are currently two situations where EC Regulation 261 automatically applies.
- Travellers whose departure airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in case of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Travellers coming from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Claim compensation for strikes within the airline
EC Regulation 261 only covers strikes by airline staff. It does not apply to strikes by airport staff.
Claim compensation for a flight delay with Icelandair
Was your flight delayed? EC Regulation 261 allows you to file a claim with the airline and receive compensation. The regulation states that there must be a delay of more than 3 hours at a European Union airport to qualify for compensation.

Claim compensation for a cancelled flight with Icelandair
If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to financial compensation. However, the cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure. The law considers that passengers did not have enough time to find an alternative solution.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller.
Claim compensation for overbooking with Icelandair
Overbooking, also known as overselling , means that the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight, and you can no longer board. This situation entitles you to financial compensation from the airline.
Note, to claim compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.
The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey.
- For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight distance between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
- For an EU flight over 1500 km, the maximum compensation amount is €400.
- For a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country, you could receive up to €600 in compensation.
