Budapest Airport
Located in Ferihegy, 16 kilometres from the city centre, Budapest Airport is the largest airport in Hungary. It welcomed over 11 million passengers in 2016.
It is also known as Ferenc Liszt Airport, named after the composer, a true national symbol.
Situated in the heart of the European Community area, this airport serves many European destinations. However, some airlines also fly to other destinations: South Korea with Korean Air, Israel with Arkia, China with Air China, etc.
Budapest is at the heart of Europe. However, when it comes to protecting travellers, it is not always European law that applies. We explain the details.

Air travel: what does European law provide?
The European regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 governs the operation of airlines. It sets out a number of obligations for them. At the same time, it guarantees rights to their passengers.
The right to be transported to your destination
This right is ensured at the European level, but other countries also guarantee it. If you arrive on time for boarding, with the correct documents, the airline must take you to your destination.
If the airline cancels your flight or denies you boarding due to overbooking, they must offer you a solution. You should be able to arrive as soon as possible.
The right to care in case of long delays
If, despite the airline's efforts, your departure is delayed, you are entitled to refreshments and meals. If you need to stay overnight, they must cover your accommodation costs. You are also entitled to assistance for two phone calls.
The right to compensation in case of delay, cancellation, or overbooking
If your flight is delayed by at least 2 hours, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to a fixed compensation, subject to conditions.
This ranges from €125 to €600 depending on the type of incident and the distance travelled by your plane. Compensation is due provided the airline is responsible.
How does the law apply at Budapest Airport?
Budapest Airport is a European airport.
Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 therefore applies to:
- any flight departing from Budapest or another airport within the European Community area
- any flight to Budapest operated by a European airline.
This regulation does not apply to flights from third countries operated by non-European airlines.
Nevertheless, as most flights to Budapest are operated by European airlines, there is a good chance your flight will be covered.

Is your flight experiencing issues at Budapest Airport? Delayed can assist you with your compensation claim.
If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding due to overbooking, you may be entitled to compensation.
However, in a Hungarian airport, it is not always easy to get the information you need.
Rest assured, your compensation claim really starts after your journey. You have up to two years to make it. Delayed, a specialist in air passenger rights, will assist you in this process.
