Passenger rights at Frankfurt Airport
Air travel can involve several disruptions that may affect the quality of your flight. These can include a delay, an cancellation or overbooking of your flight. The EC 621 regulation of the European Union provides compensation and protection for travellers who have experienced a disruption on their flight. To receive this compensation, certain conditions must be met.
What compensation can you claim?
In the event of disruptions to your flight departing from Frankfurt Airport, whether it be a delay, an cancellation or overbooking, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey and its duration.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you can claim compensation of €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay and more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you can claim €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay and more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you can claim €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay and more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you can claim €300 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €600 for more than 4 hours delay.
Which flights are covered by European law?
The European Union has implemented the EC 261 regulation to protect passengers affected by a delay, an cancellation or overbooking. There are two situations where the regulation automatically applies.
- Travellers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in the event of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or destination.
- Travellers from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Strikes at Frankfurt Airport: what are your rights?
During your flight, an airline staff strike may occur, causing the delay or cancellation of your flight. The EC 261 regulation allows you to claim compensation if an airline staff strike occurs and affects your flight.
Note that airport staff strikes are not covered by EC 261 regulation and do not entitle you to compensation.
Delayed flight at Frankfurt Airport
A flight delay is one of the situations that entitles you to compensation from the airline. To be eligible for this compensation, there must be a delay of more than two hours at a European Union airport.
Please note, EC 261 regulation only applies to flights delayed due to specific conditions (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible.
Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation.
Cancelled flight at Frankfurt Airport: your rights to compensation
A cancelled flight allows you to make a claim with the airline for compensation. However, certain conditions must be met to receive your compensation. The cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure. This is because the regulation considers that passengers have not had sufficient time to find an alternative solution.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline may offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to take the alternative flight, your flat-rate compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per passenger.

Overbooked flight at Frankfurt Airport
Some airlines practice overbooking or overselling, meaning the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight. In this case, you can make a compensation claim with the airline as provided by EC 261 regulation.
Note, you must not be among the volunteers who agree not to board to be eligible for compensation.
- The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you can claim a maximum of €250.
- For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you can claim a maximum compensation of €400.
- For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country.
