Which flights are covered by EC 261?
The EC 261 regulation entitles passengers affected by a cancellation, delay or overbooking to compensation. The regulation automatically applies in the following cases :
- Travellers whose arrival airport is located within the European Union can claim compensation, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Travellers whose final destination and airline are located within the European Union.
What compensation amount can you claim?
In cases of delay, cancellation or overbooking of your flight, the compensation amount may vary depending on the distance of the journey and the length of the delay.
Below are indicative compensation amounts:
- For a flight within the European Union, compensation ranges from 250 to 400 euros.
- For a flight outside the European Union, compensation ranges from 400 to 600 euros.
Strikes at Helsinki Airport
The EC 261 regulation only covers airline staff strikes. In the event of an airport staff strike, you cannot claim compensation under EC 261.
Compensation for a flight delay at Helsinki Airport
In the event of a delay of more than two hours at an airport within the European Union, you may be entitled to compensation. The delay must be due to specific circumstances such as a technical fault for which the airline is responsible.
Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Helsinki Airport
To receive compensation for a flight cancellation , the cancellation must be announced less than 14 days before the departure date. You can receive up to €600 in compensation per passenger.
