Your rights when travelling from Munich Airport
When flying, you may encounter disruptions that can affect the quality of your flight. This could be a delay, a cancellation or overbooking. The European Union has established EC Regulation 261 to protect and compensate passengers affected by a disruption. In the event of a delay, cancellation, or overbooking, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
What amount of compensation can you claim?
The EC Regulation 261 allows you to receive compensation if your flight has been delayed, cancelled or overbooked. The amount of compensation paid by the airline depends on the distance of the journey and its duration.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to:
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
What types of flights are covered by the European regulation?
The EC Regulation 261 was established by the European Union to compensate passengers affected by a disruption on their flight (delay, cancellation or overbooking). There are currently two situations where the regulation applies automatically.
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in the event of a delay or cancellation of a flight, regardless of the nationality of the airline or the destination.
- Passengers from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
What to do in case of a strike?
If an airline staff strike affects your flight and causes a delay or cancellation, you can make a compensation claim. Indeed, EC Regulation 261 allows you to receive compensation in the event of an airline strike.
Airport staff strikes are not covered by EC Regulation 261 and do not entitle you to compensation.
What to do if the flight is delayed?
If your flight was delayed, EC Regulation 261 allows you to receive compensation to offset the inconvenience caused. The regulation legally defines the conditions for accessing compensation. To receive the compensation, there must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport in the European Union.
Please note, EC Regulation 261 only applies to flights delayed due to specific conditions (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation.
What to do if your flight from Munich is cancelled?
A flight cancellation preventing you from boarding is one of the situations that entitles you to compensation under EC Regulation 261. To receive your compensation, the cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure.
In the event of a cancellation, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation is calculated based on the distance travelled and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per passenger.
Overbooked flight from Munich Airport
Overbooking or overselling means the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight. If you are affected by overbooking, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline.
Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board.
- The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1,500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
- For a flight within the EU over 3,500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country.
