How to get a refund for a flight with SAS Scandinavian Airlines?
There are no legal rules regarding cancellations or changes to flight tickets by passengers. If you cannot take your flight for personal reasons, you should refer to the airline's fare conditions to understand their refund or cancellation policy. SAS Scandinavian states on its website that, depending on the type of ticket chosen, you can make changes to your flight ticket. Reservation change fees may apply. It is also noted on the carrier's website that regular SAS tickets can be modified up to one hour before departure. Some tickets will not allow you to obtain a refund (SAS Go Light, SAS Go Smart, SAS Youth Ticket). Please note, if you made your reservation through an agency or travel site, you must contact them to find out the available options.
Your rights in case of flight disruption with SAS Scandinavian Airlines
Air travel can involve disruptions that affect your journey. This could be a delay, a cancellation or overbooking. If you find yourself in one of these situations, you may be entitled to compensation as provided by EC Regulation 261.
Amount of compensation received
If you have experienced a delay, a cancellation or overbooking of your flight, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey, as well as the estimated delay.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to compensation of €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €600 for more than 4 hours delay.
What does the European regulation cover?
The purpose of EC Regulation 261 is to compensate passengers who experience a disruption (delay, cancellation or overbooking) on their flight. There are currently two situations where EC Regulation 261 automatically applies and allows for compensation.
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation in the event of a flight delay or cancellation, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Passengers departing from a non-EU country but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Strikes within the airline
EC Regulation 261 only covers strikes by airline staff. In this case only, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. EC Regulation 261 does not apply to strikes by airport staff.
Compensation for a flight delay with SAS Scandinavian Airlines
Was your flight delayed? EC Regulation 261 allows you to make a claim with the airline and receive compensation. Please note, the regulation stipulates that there must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport in the European Union to be eligible for compensation.
EC Regulation 261 applies only to flights where the delay is due to specific conditions, such as a technical fault or operational issue for which the airline is responsible.
Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight with SAS Scandinavian Airlines
If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to financial compensation from the carrier. However, the cancellation must occur less than 14 days before departure. The legislation considers that passengers have not had sufficient time to find an alternative solution.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or provide a full refund of your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller.

Overbooking with SAS Scandinavian Airlines
Overbooking, also known as overselling means that the airline has sold more tickets than available seats on the flight. This situation entitles you to financial compensation from the airline.
Please note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be among the volunteers who agree not to board.
- The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €400.
