Your rights in case of flight disruption with Wizz Air
Flying gives you the opportunity to explore the world. However, certain disruptions can occur during your journey and affect your travel plans. These may include a delay, cancellation , or overbooking. The EC 261 regulation entitles you to financial compensation as a form of redress.
What is the amount of compensation?
A delay, cancellation , or overbooking of your flight entitles you to receive compensation for the inconvenience caused. The amount paid by the airline depends on the distance of the journey and its duration.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to compensation of €125 for less than 2 hours delay or €250 for 2 hours delay or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of 1,500 to 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €400 for 3 hours delay or more.
- For a flight outside the European Union of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 compensation for less than 2 hours delay or €600 for more than 4 hours delay.
Which flights are covered by the European regulation?
The EC 261 regulation was established by the European Union to protect and compensate passengers affected by a flight disruption ( delay, cancellation , or overbooking). There are two scenarios in which you can automatically receive compensation:
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, regardless of the airline's nationality or destination.
- Passengers departing from a non-EU country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.

The case of strikes within Wizz Air
The EC 261 regulation states that airline staff strikes entitle you to financial compensation from the carrier. Please note, compensation can only be claimed if it is an airline strike. The regulation does not cover airport staff strikes.
Compensation for a flight delay with Wizz Air
If your flight was delayed, you can submit a compensation claim to the airline. The EC 261 regulation strictly governs the conditions for eligibility for compensation. To receive compensation, there must be a delay of more than 2 hours at an airport within the European Union.
The EC 261 regulation only applies to flights delayed due to specific conditions (technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation.
Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight by Wizz Air
If your flight is cancelled, you can submit a compensation claim to the airline. To receive compensation, the cancellation must have occurred less than 14 days before departure. The law considers that travellers did not have sufficient time to find an alternative solution.
In the case of a cancelled flight, the airline must offer you an alternative flight or refund your ticket. If you board the alternative flight, your fixed compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay at arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per passenger.
Overbooked flight with Wizz Air
Overbooking, also known as overselling , means the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available on the flight. If you find yourself in this situation, you should know that you can claim compensation.
Note, to be eligible for compensation, you must not be among the volunteers who agree not to board:
- The compensation amount depends on the journey's distance. For a flight up to 1500 km, you can claim up to €250.
- For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you can claim up to €400 in compensation.
- For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the EU and a non-EU state.
