Your rights at Lisbon Airport
A flight is an opportunity for many travellers to explore the world. However, certain disruptions may occur during your journey. These could be a delay, a cancellation, or overbooking. The European Union's EC 261 regulation aims to protect and compensate passengers affected by a disruption to their flight. To receive this compensation, certain conditions must be met.
Compensation amounts
If you experienced any disruptions during your flight resulting in a delay or cancellation, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. The amount of your compensation depends on both the duration and the distance of the journey.
Below are the compensation amounts you may be entitled to.
- For a flight of 1,500 km or less: you may be entitled to €125 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €250 for a delay of 2 hours or more.
- For an intra-European Union flight of more than 1,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a non-European Union flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €200 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €400 for a delay of 3 hours or more.
- For a non-European Union flight of more than 3,500 km: you may be entitled to €300 for a delay of less than 2 hours or €600 for a delay of more than 4 hours.
Which flights does the EC 261 regulation cover?
With the EC 261 regulation, the European Union protects and compensates passengers affected by a delay, cancellation, or overbooking on their flight. There are two scenarios where the regulation automatically applies.
- Passengers whose arrival airport is located in the European Union can claim compensation for a delay or cancellation, regardless of the nationality of the airline or the destination.
- Passengers departing from a non-European Union country, but whose final destination and airline are located in the European Union.
Strike at Lisbon Airport
The EC 261 regulation states that strikes by airline staff leading to a cancellation or delay may entitle you to compensation. If you find yourself in this situation, you can file a claim with the airline. Note that strikes by airport staff are not covered by the EC 261 regulation and do not entitle you to compensation.
Compensation for a flight delay at Lisbon Airport
If your flight at Lisbon Airport was delayed, you may be entitled to compensation as outlined by the EC 261 regulation. To qualify for this compensation, the regulation requires a delay of more than two hours at a European Union airport.
Please note, the EC 261 regulation only covers flights delayed due to specific conditions (a technical fault or operational issue) for which the airline is responsible. Extraordinary circumstances do not entitle you to compensation.

Claiming compensation for a cancelled flight at Lisbon Airport
A flight cancellation allows you to claim financial compensation from the airline, as provided by the EC 261 regulation. If you wish to claim compensation following a cancellation, it is essential that it occurred less than 14 days before departure. This is because the legislation considers that passengers did not have sufficient time to find an alternative solution.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline may offer you an alternative flight or a full refund of your ticket. If you choose to take the alternative flight, your flat-rate compensation will be calculated based on the flight distance and the estimated delay upon arrival. The compensation amount can be up to €600 per traveller.
Overbooking at Lisbon Airport
If you are affected by overbooking, the EC 261 regulation entitles you to financial compensation. This practice, also known as overbooking, means that the airline has sold more tickets than there are available seats.
Note, you must not be one of the volunteers who agree not to board to be eligible for compensation.
- The compensation amount depends on the length of the journey. For a flight up to 1500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum of €250.
- For a flight between 1500 and 3500 km, you may be entitled to a maximum compensation of €400.
- For an EU flight over 3500 km, the maximum compensation is €400, and €600 for a journey between the European Union and a non-EU country.
