Valencia Airport
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, after Madrid and Barcelona. It is located on the Mediterranean coast. Its airport, Valencia International Airport, is situated about 8 km west of the city.
With just over 4.5 million passengers annually, it is the tenth busiest airport in Spain. While it mainly handles EU flights, there are also some connections with non-EU countries.
These include Morocco, Turkey, and countries bordering the European Union such as Moldova, Serbia, and Turkey.
At Valencia Airport, your rights depend on whether you are departing or arriving, and especially on who operates your flight.

Valencia Airport and Regulation (EC) No 261/2004
Spain is a member state of the European Union. Therefore, Valencia Airport falls under EU law.
In 2004, Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 came into effect. It governs commercial aviation and defines the rights of air travellers and the obligations it imposes on airlines.
This regulation applies to:
- all flights departing from an airport within the European Community area (including Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland)
- flights arriving in the same community area, operated by an airline based there.
Therefore, not all flights at Valencia are covered.
If your flight to Valencia is operated by a European airline, you are covered by this regulation. Most of these flights, in fact, originate from the community area.
However, if you took a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul, you are not covered.
So, make sure to check which airline operates your flight.
Your rights under European regulations
If you are covered by European regulations, your rights are as follows.
The right to be transported to your destination
You have paid for your flight, your documents are in order, and you are on time for boarding. The airline must transport you to your destination.
If they cancel the flight or deny you boarding due to overbooking, they must offer you re-routing at the earliest opportunity.
If no re-routing suits you, they must refund you. The refund means you forgo taking this flight. However, it also releases the airline from its obligations.
The right, under certain conditions, to have your expenses covered
If your flight is significantly delayed, the airline must provide you with drinks and meals, or cover these costs at the airport shops.
If this delay requires you to stay overnight, the airline must pay for a hotel stay. Finally, they must cover up to two phone calls.
The right, under certain conditions, to compensation in case of delay, cancellation, or overbooking
European law also provides for a fixed compensation. This is not automatic; you must request it.
In case of delay, cancellation, or overbooking, you can, under certain conditions, request compensation.
The amount depends on the delay experienced, the distance travelled, and the status of the flight. It ranges from €125 to €600.
